Alex’s Going Away Party and a Great Picture!

June 12th, 2001

Sorry for the lack of updates over this weekend. I’ve been busy with a crapload of stuff:
1. Post LASIK surgery stuff (check up, medication, being careful about my eyes)
2. Johnson & Johnson Medical Forms (for my employment)
3. Housing Caroline and entertaining her on her last days in NYC
4. Alex’s going away party - he’s moving to Munich, Germany
5. Enjoying my new set of eyes and taking awesome pictures

As for my LASIK surgery (the procedure where they use an eximer laser to correct your vision), it went perfect and flawless–that’s what you get when you pick one of the few doctors in the country with a PERFECT record. On my post-op checkup, I was seeing roughly 20/25, although now I’m sure it’ll be 20/20 (or even better) since now I can see stuff on my roof farther than I did with contacts. It really feels liberating, and it’s weird, because I finally realize what kind of psychological effect corrective lenses have on the human self-esteem. Before surgery I wasn’t supposed to wear contacts, so I went around for weeks with my glasses. My self-esteem plummetted, and I seriously felt little, and puny–a dork. After surgery when I could see with my own eyes, without any assistance, I had this liberated feeling… Like I felt normal now, and no longer “handicapped” in that sense. The actual laser hitting my eye only took 28 seconds (he counted off as he was guiding the laser) per eye. It’s kind of strange, since there’s this blinking dot you’re supposed to stare at for the duration of the that time, but since you have no lenses, you see a blurry blob. As the laser pops away at your eye, you can see that dot become slowly clearer and clearer. After the laser sculpting is complete, I got up, and amazing I could see everything within 20 feet of me, something that I could not do before, being 20/400. However note that is was still slightly burry since the clear flap of my eye was still lose (which will fuse back to the eye on its own over 48 hours). My vision the next morning increased way dramatically, I could see 20/25, although at close range things were slightly blurry (which is because of the flap). After 48 hours everything is sharp, and I could see anything. However, the eye isn’t used to reading close yet, and that takes a few more days. Now I see perfectly fine, anything close, far, etc. Life is good… =)

Caroline crashed at my place for a few days since she had no place to go until her flight on Tuesday to her hometown of Seattle. She babysat my apartment while I was away in surgery (which prior to those dates, my good friend Chi-Hye baby sat my place so should could study for her dental exam).

08/08: Alex Goodbye Party

Friday I got back home to my apt, and so we both went to Alex’s going away party. I’ve known Alex since freshman year at NYU, when we met at orientation, and our parents met each other and clicked very well. To this day, we all remember each other, and ask about what’s new.

Here’s a few pics from the party - more pics are in the pics section in the gallery.

I’ve been spending a lot of time on my roofdeck of my apartment lately since the weather has been fabulous. We got a nice hammock up there, benches, sun chairs, and other great stuff, but nothing beats the view of the skyline from the roofdeck:

Back on my roofdeck... the view!

I bought a pair of Soviet Army issued binoculars in Greece, and mounted it on a tripod, and experimented to see if I could take my little digital camera and get a nice close up of the Empire State Building. After much effort and experimenting, my efforts were successful, and I managed to get this wicked shot:

Crazy pic I took by taking my binoculars and sticking my Canon S110 into the eyepiece

FYI- this image is copyrighted by me, and if you’d like to use it, please contact me. It’s also been submitted to Steve’s Digicam’s Monthly photography contest, so I’m hoping to win. =)

Let me know what you think.

I’m going to post a thorough article later this week in my rants section on how the Lasik procedure went in detail, the risks, and details since I’ve been getting alot of instant messages and emails asking if I recommend the procedure.
