Incas had binary!
June 23rd, 2003I know I haven’t posted in awhile, but things have been really busy and stressful. I’m trying to balance out getting all my work done at my current rotation which ends June 30th, since I join my final placement position in July. Plus most of my free time goes into cleaning my apartment or helping my parents pack their stuff for their pending move. Moving furniture and taking things to the dump is a lot of hard work! Since my time is already compacted, the only compromise I have to get things done is to give up sleep. I’m only getting about 3-4 hours of sleep a day, and am continuously getting tired. On weekends I can sleep for 8-9 hours but I still feel quite tired since my body is completely lagged on sleep. I need a vacation… badly. I have over 2 months of sleep to catch up on from this viscous cycle. It’s toll is starting to appear on me physically, black bags under my eyes, nervous twitches, inability to stay focused or attentive. Sometimes it’s gotten so bad that I’ve almost nodded off while driving. That’s when I try to take a nap when I come home. Once cleaning of my apartment is done, hopefully I can return to a normal schedule… I just hope Caroline can be patient with me until then…
Anyways, this morning I read an interesting article about how they found out that the Incas were using a form of binary in their language, except it was only 7 bits long. Their language is the only language that was 3 dimensional which used these bits, making their language the most effient language in history. Incas were incredibly awesome. It was from them that we borrowed the 60 minute hour, 60 second time units. Why did they choose 60? Becuase 60 is divisible by so many numbers making it easy to segment blocks of time: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30… So it’s great to see that they had something like binary 500 years before computers…
