Driving in Torrential Rain!
July 23rd, 2003Yesterday was probably one of the worst thunderstorms I’ve ever encountered in my life. Driving home was a mess. Rain was spotty. It’d be clear one moment, then just unrelentless downpour that limited visibility to no more than 10 feet in front of my car. Traffic went to a standstill. Luckily for me, I had RainX on my car which helped big time. I could see fairly well, just no more than 10 feet in front of me. The tires do very well in rain. Some roads had minor flooding but it wasn’t too bad. It was just nerve racking since I swore some crazy NJ driver would hit me from behind because they were doing something stupid like driving 80 mph with zero visibility. I turned on my hazards just in case and drove on. Press MORE to read on…
Funny part was that I didn’t even go home. I had arranged to meet another RSX owner who wanted to trade my previous radar detector, the Bel980 for his Tanabe Sustec front strut tower bar (improves the RSX’s handling by making it more rigid) plus $80 cash. I agreed and decided to meet him up at Ikea. Parked at Ikea, waiting in the almost empty parking lot, I watch lightning systematically hit the poles that the lights were on. The guy finally arrived and we made our exchange. Fair exchange in my opinion, although others think that guy got the better end of the deal. It’s alright though. I already have a better radar detector.
On the drive home, the weather was still pretty bad. Despite this I’ve seen pepole do the most retarded things. Coincidently, they’re all NJ plates on the cars. Stupid things like cutting someone off when it’s obvious that the water on the ground is not gonna help him stop in time. Bang 3 cars smashed because of one idiot’s mistake. I saw this coming and immediately started moving to a different lane when I “sensed” that this guy was gonna do something stupid. You can always tell… these are those people that hug close to the line that they want to change in, or their head isn’t focused on the road ahead of them. They’re too damn busy checking their mirrors and stuff to see if there’s an opening. Then either they hit the guy in front of them, or cut off the person in the other lane. An NJ wonders why their insurance is so high?
I also saw a truck get hit by lightning while driving. The look on the driver’s face was like he saw Madeusa… stark shocked! NYC Cabbies also do the most retarded things in the rain too. From the Holland Tunnel to my apt is only about 14 blocks. In that same time, I was almost hit by one cab 3 times. The guy was just trying to weave all over the place and he only came inches from my bumper. Had I not stopped, with ABS, he’d have clipped me big time and taken my bumper or push in my passenger door. I’m thinking about mounting my camcorder again in my car and reporting these guys to the cops or better… Their insurance agencies. It’s easy to pull up a plate # and query info on public records if you know how and subscribe to the services. Then again, I’m sure sending the video to the Taxi and Limo Commission to complain about reckless driving would get their medallions revoked. 90% of the time, these guys are still on the cell phone which is illegal in NYC for any cabbie to be on a cell phone (headset or not) while driving. Go ahead sucka… If you hit me - I got video as proof.
